Empire and Extravagance - Reading Émile Zola - Episode 22

Today, we venture back to 19th-century Imperial France, in two vivid novels of Émile Zola: The Ladies' Paradise (Au Bonheur des Dames) and The Kill (La Curée).

Oh man, it's a shame you couldn't get through The Kill. The ending further gives the idea of lacking morality. It was interesting to see how they ignored part of the family, I even sensed he might be hinting on gender discrimination? I've decided to read the whole series chronologically and I highly recommend you give the first one a try. There is a great difference in his earlier works and later ones. I believe as time went by he grew as a writer. Oh yeah, just a heads up, if you do intend to read more Zola, skip his 5th book; The sin of father Mouret, because it does contain the same type of scenes as the kill when it comes to the characters sex life. Great podcast, really enjoyed your thoughts on Zola. Will definitely check some more.

My First Classics Club List

So...contrary to my past practices, I am starting to embrace epic challenges.  Before this enthusiasm leaves me, I've decided to finally join The Classics Club and commit to reading 50 classics within five years. It's a pretty reasonable goal (ten classics a year), since I mostly read classics anyway.  But I'm making it more difficult by including some chunksters and books I've been putting off for years and some that fall under both (*cough* War and Peace ).  I also threw in some rereads that I keep meaning to return to.  The list also came out to 52 instead of 50 (sigh), but I'm only committing to 50.
